Azerbaijan joins Islamic corporation to develop private sector
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Jan 11, 2002

Text of unattributed report by Azerbaijani newspaper Ekho on 11 January entitled "Azerbaijan has become a member of the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector"

The official media yesterday published the law of the Azerbaijani Republic "On the Azerbaijani Republic joining the agreement `On creating an Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector'". The idea of setting up such a structure appeared in the mid-1990s. At the 24th annual session of the council of managers of the Islamic Development Bank in 1999, the leaders of member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference signed a relevant agreement.

The Ministry of Economic Development said that the main goal of this corporation was to coordinate efforts by member states of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to develop entrepreneurship, create a common private business database and establish business relations between businessmen from Islamic countries. We should point out that entry into this corporation will allow Azerbaijani businessmen to present projects to obtain a credit from the Islamic Development Bank on privileged conditions.
